Paddy Fields at Chupak

Set in the beautiful farmland around Kampung Chupak near Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, this delightful little cave was last visited by me in 2007 accompanied by Rambli Ahmad.

At that time we surveyed a short way into the cave but we didn't have enough time to finish it. During a visit to Sarawak by two caving friends, Dave Gill from UK and Jos Burgers from the Netherlands we spent four days caving in this area.

We surveyed the rest of the lower series but, due to lack of time, left the upper series for a later date. Although the cave is quite small there are few places where you have to stoop or crawl, after all this is Sarawak, home of the largest caves in the world (so far).

The first problem we had to overcome was to get past the green pit viper in the entrance. No problem for Dave Gill. As the first to enter he walked straight past without noticing it. I went second holding a stick between myself and the snake to prevent it striking but, once past, I dropped the stick and unfortunately if fell on the snake causing it to slither away into a hole. Jos wasn't pleased as he intended to take a photograph.Rock Formation in Chupak
