On Saturday 14th January I joined a group of PDMHS members for a walk over Eldon Hill to look at the sites of mining remains on Old Moor.
The day started off below zero but with clear blue skies, ideal weather for walking. The group consisting of around 9 members were led by Tony Wood who explained the history of the various sites we viewed. Places visited include Watts Grove, Jowle Grove, Jack Eidson's Opencast and Oxlow Rake.
Features included bowse teems, capped engine shafts, opencast workings, belland yards, washing floors, gin circles and water storage ponds. Although I had visited this area many times before I found it a most interesting and pleasant way to spend a morning.

This walk passed not far from Moss Rake and reminded me of some photographs I took in 2005 while the plant was still working. These photos can be seen here.
